Bioinformatics in Food Science Symposium

to

Join us to explore how bioinformatics and data science, including AI technologies, are transforming the science behind our food, from microbes in food fermentation and sustainable agriculture to advancements in human health!

The symposium will be held on February 24, 2025, at the Omnia Auditorium on Wageningen Campus. It will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, followed by bites and drinks.

We have a very exciting line up, with keynotes given by:

  • Gabriele Berg from TU Graz, Austria, will unveil insights on the edible microbiome. Her talk is titled "Tracking the microbiome from the soil to our gut via plant-based foods".
  • Bas Teusink from VU Amsterdam will provide an in-depth perspective on "The NGF Holomicrobiome Institute: Challenges and Opportunities for Bioinformatics in Food Science."

and invited speakers:

  • Ronnie de Jonge from Utrecht University explores plant-microbiome interactions to growth better crops by integrating laboratory experiments with machine learning models. Ronnie will speak about "Dissecting mechanisms of root colonization and microbiome assembly using beneficial microbes and synthetic communities".
  • Herwig Bachmann from VU Amsterdam specializes in both conventional and unconventional microbial fermentation, employing advanced experimental techniques and a broad array of bioinformatics tools. Herwig will speak about "Using the metabolic potential of microbes to improve plant proteins".
  • Jos Boekhorst from Wageningen University and Research will explain how bioinformatics is used to investigate what happens to food after we eat it and its impact on human health, with his talk under the title: “What do microbes do to our food after we eat it: unearthing biology through hypothesis-driven mining of (meta)genomics data”.
  • Aschwin Schilperoort from dsm-firmenich will showcase a industrial application that seamlessly integrates AI and lab automation to optimize microbial communities for yogurt production. The presentation, titled “The Perfect Blend: Data-Driven Design of Lactic Acid Bacteria Ratios for your Yogurt”

With more to be announced! Detailed program will be available soon.

We also have space in the program for two 20-minute talks by selected speakers. Everyone is welcome to submit their abstracts below.

The symposium will be free and includes coffee & tea, snacks, lunch, and drinks and bites afterwards!

Important: Please register only if you are certain of your attendance. If unforeseen circumstances prevent you from joining after registration, kindly inform us promptly to allow someone else the opportunity to participate. Your cooperation ensures a smooth and inclusive event for all.
