Lecture Overview

This presentation discusses Bayesian theory and its applications in the field of reliability engineering. It addresses the basic theory, philosophy, and simulation techniques to compute the posterior distribution such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Particle Filtering methods. Application examples are the life prediction of Lithium-ion batteries, blades in turbine engine, computer model calibration with uncertainty using real data, and crack growth prediction of aircraft structures.

Speaker Overview

Professor Joo-Ho Choi received Ph.D. degree of mechanical engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1987. In 1988, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Iowa. During 1988-1996, he worked in the Samsung Corning as an engineer for TV glasses development and production. Since 1997, he joined the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Korea Aerospace University as a professor. Over the last decade, his research has been focused on the reliability engineering and the prognostics and health management (PHM) for optimum maintenance strategy. He has over 100 journal and conference publications, among which the 50 papers deal with the PHM and Bayesian reliability. He has delivered over 60 invited speeches including a number of plenary and keynote at the conferences. He has served as the general chair of first Asia Pacific Conference of the PHM Society at Jeju island Korea in 2017 and established the Korean society for PHM (KSPHM) in 2018 with the mission to promote PHM in Korea. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the distinguished leadership from KSPHM and the fellow of PHM society in the USA.
