A dialogue on inclusive sport and play
Children with a disability or a chronic illness (25% of all children!) often feel excluded. They face barriers to playing with their peers, attending (mainstream) school, or taking part in sport or other leisure activities. As a result, these children are deprived of the opportunity to develop important skills they need to function to the best of their ability, both now and later in life. An inclusive society begins in childhood, but how do you achieve that?
During this dialogue session, we will gather input and discuss inclusivity for children, the barriers that hinder inclusive sport and play for children, and solutions to facilitate inclusive sport and play. Specific questions we wish to address, therefore, include:
- What do we mean by inclusivity for children?
- Is the physical outdoor space for children inclusive?
- How can we ensure that all children can play and take part in sport together?
- What do we need to do in the physical outdoor space to facilitate inclusive sport and play?
- What is required from the social model to facilitate inclusive sport and play?
- How can we empower all children?
Specific ideas arising from this dialogue session will also be incorporated into a major research project on this topic.

About the SPACES-project
The dialogue session is being organised as part of the SPACES project. SPACES is an interdisciplinary project aimed at developing solutions for outdoor spaces to enable inclusive play for all children, regardless of any disabilities or chronic illnesses. Scientists, urban designers, policymakers, parents, and, of course, children and young people are invited to discuss inclusivity for children and the barriers that hinder inclusive sport and play for children. Can you come up with creative solutions to facilitate inclusive sport and play?
