Every year on 4 May, Utrecht University commemorates the members of the university community who died in the war and occupation of the period 1940-1945. The Vice-President of the Executive Board and a representative of the Utrecht University Council will lay a wreath at the commemoration monument by the entrance of the Auditorium.
Before the laying of the wreath, a short lecture entitled "Kiezen in en voor vrijheid" (Choosing in and for freedom) will be held by Professor Dr Willem Koops. He will raise the following questions: Can we choose rationally? Is choosing an existential decision or do our brains choose separately from our thinking processes? To what extent are we morally responsible for our choices?
