If you’re staying in the Netherlands for a shorter period, renting a bike is often the most practical and sustainable option. You pay a fixed monthly fee and don’t have to worry about maintenance or theft. Subscriptions can usually be cancelled after the first month.

Student Mobility provides rental bikes. Especially for the 2025 Welcome Week, Student Mobility and Utrecht University have teamed up to offer you a dedicated mobility package, consisting of a public transport card customized for internationals + a durable rental bike*. Via the Student Mobility platform you can reserve a 7-geared rental bike with handbrakes for €25 per month**. You can easily pick up your rental bike on campus during the Welcome Week and return it at the end of the semester.

*The products included in the mobility package can be ordered separately.  

**In the reservation you pre-pay 40 EUR, covering the cost for the first 1.5 months. Prices are based on normal usage and bike-return upon departure. 

Other options: Swapfiets is another popular company that offers bikes on lease.

• Practise riding a bike before you get here. Riding a bike here has been described as participating in the Tour de France for normal riders, bringing up your skill level cannot hurt.
