Dutch phone plan
Depending on your current mobile plan, you may need to get a Dutch phone number during your stay in the Netherlands.
Why consider a Dutch phone number
- Avoid unexpected roaming costs.
- Some foreign numbers deactivate after a few months abroad.
- Certain services (e.g. IKEA delivery, Tikkie) require a Dutch number.
- You’ll usually have better coverage and faster internet.
Types of Dutch phone plans
Prepaid SIM card
- Cheap and flexible — top up when needed.
- Easy to stop using when you leave the Netherlands.
2. Mobile phone contract
- Includes a SIM card and often a new phone.
- Fixed monthly fee and usually a 1–2 year commitment.
- Less flexible — not ideal for short stays.
3. SIM-only subscription
- Use your own phone with a Dutch provider.
- More flexible (often month-to-month) and adjustable.
What you need to sign up
- Valid passport or ID card
- Proof of Address / Citizen Service Number
- A Dutch bank account
