Doctors and healthcare

In the Netherlands, the healthcare system might be different than what you are used to. Here the general practitioner (GP) or 'huisarts' is your first point of contact for all matters regarding your healthcare. GPs are the portal into all other branches of the healthcare system in the Netherlands, and can provide referrals to all specialists and to a hospital if necessary.

It is strongly recommended to register with a GP in your area as soon as you are settled. Do not wait until you are ill to take action with this!

Find a GP

You can find a general practitioner close to your house via ZorgkaartNederland by filling in your postcode in the top right corner. Several GPs allow you to register online whilst some might require a physical appointment. Several practices have websites in English and most doctors are able to carry out appointments in English.

Find a Dentist

It is also useful to sign-up for a dentist or 'tandarts' in the Netherlands. You can find a dentist in your area via ZorgkaartNederland by filling in your postcode in the top right corner. For dental care, you can directly contact your dentist. Many basic insurance packages do not cover dental care so this might require out of pocket expenses or upgrading your healthcare.

Emergency Services

  • Call 112 for an ambulance, the police or fire brigade (this is the general European emergency number).
  • Call 0900-8844 for police matters that are NOT an emergency.
  • Call 030-253 4444 for Utrecht University Security.

Please note! Do NOT go to a hospital emergency room unless you have an actual emergency. To see a GP during the weekend or at night, go to a GP Urgent Care Center ('Huisartsenpost') or call 0900-4501450
