Not starting a study programme

Not starting your study programme at Utrecht University has important implications for your enrolment, residence permit, and possible tuition fee refund. On this page, you will find what to expect and which steps you need to take if you deregister.

If you do not start your study programme at Utrecht University (for example due to deferral, cancellation, not meeting the admission requirements, or entry visa rejection), the university is legally required to inform the IND about your deregistration of enrolment. The IND will subsequently revoke your MVV (if you need one) and residence permit based on the date of deregistration from Utrecht University. 

Please note that when you are no longer enrolled as a student at Utrecht University, the university can no longer act as your sponsor for your residence permit.

Students who do not start their study programme at Utrecht University will be eligible for a tuition fee refund. Please note that the refund process may differ depending on the timing of the deregistration in relation to the start of the programme.
