We encourage PhD candidates to attend this course early in their PhD. The course allows them to reflect on their choice of scientific approach.
Course description
This course introduces PhD candidates to the principles and practice of qualitative research in health sciences, exploring different ways of knowing and how qualitative inquiry complements quantitative approaches in understanding experience and context. This is a foundational course to qualitative research offering participants key theoretical concepts, practice in formulating research questions, choosing suitable methods, and addressing ethical considerations.
The course takes PhD candidates through the entire arc of qualitative inquiry, from conceptual foundations to analysis and communication, and is tailored to address the curiosity of those new to qualitative research methods as well as those more familiar with qualitative research methods. Over two interactive days, participants will examine different ways of knowing and discover how qualitative inquiry helps us understand experiences, meanings, and social contexts that numbers alone cannot capture. The course introduces key theoretical and methodological foundations and shows how qualitative research complements quantitative approaches within mixed-methods and interdisciplinary settings. Through case-based learning, PhD candidates will practice formulating research questions, choosing suitable methods (such as interviews, focus groups, observations, or arts-based techniques) whilst also addressing the critical voices in the qualitative-quantitative methods debate. By the end of the course, participants will be able to position qualitative research confidently within the broader field of health research and engage critically with its possibilities, challenges, and limitations.
Entrance fee: This course is free for GSLS PhD candidates.
