GSLS Master’s Supervision Essentials
Target audience
This course is for PhD candidates that supervise or plan to supervise GSLS Master's students.
Following a supervision course is compulsory for all GSLS PhD candidates who will supervise a Master's student. This requirement follows the regulations of Utrecht University. The GSLS offers three types of courses with different levels: GSLS Master's Supervision Essentials, Supervising MSc Students: Starter Kit, and Supervising Research of MSc Students. Please check here which course fits your situation best. If you would like advice on which course to follow, please send an e-mail to pcc@uu.nl.
Course description
Are you currently supervising a GSLS Master’s student, or preparing to take on this role soon? In this one-day course (or two half days) combined with short assignments, you will develop a solid foundation for supervising Master’s students in a way that is clear, supportive, and effective. The course introduces GSLS guidelines for supervision and offers practical methods that you can immediately apply in your own context, even when some of your students are enrolled in a non-GSLS Master’s programme. The trainers will guide you through the core principles of supervision and the different phases of the supervision process. You will become familiar with GSLS tools that support supervision, like the SEED Tool and learn how to use them in a purposeful way.
Throughout the course, you will work on key supervisory skills, including communicating openly and constructively, setting clear expectations, and conducting feedback conversations that encourage development. The focus is on building a supervision approach that is structured yet flexible, and that feels natural, enjoyable, and effective for both you and your student.
Attention: This course is designed for Supervisors of GSLS Master’s Students and during the course we will discuss the GSLS vision and tools for supervision. With this in mind, PhD candidates supervising non‑GSLS Master’s students may still decide on enrolling for this course, and they will benefit from the more general principles, skills, and methods covered.
Entrance fee: This course is free for GSLS PhD candidates.
Unfortunately we don’t offer this course for participants not part of the GSLS. Our courses tend to be fully booked by GSLS PhD candidates.
Location: Utrecht Science Park
