GSLS Master’s Supervision Essentials

After the training, you:

• are familiar with the GSLS Teachers’ Guide, rubrics website, and SEED Tool and know when and how to use it;
• understand and acknowledge the relevance of the GSLS vision regarding supervision, your responsibilities, and where to find support;
• know the importance of setting expectations and having feedback conversation for high quality supervision;
• have practiced how to apply setting expectations, and giving and asking information-rich feedback;
• can describe your own  approach to supervision and recognize the importance of communicating this to students.

This course uses a varied type of learning activities; preparation and processing assignments, information and theory sharing from our side and active learning activities (e.g., small group discussions, plenary sessions, practicing feedback conversations, etc.). During these activities we work on applying information and theories to your own practice, using your own experiences as supervisee and supervisor (if already started). There is plenty of room for discussion and asking each other and the trainers questions. 

Study load

The course accounts for 0.5 EC, which means a total of 14 hours of time investment. This will be divided over:

• 4 hours of preparation work;
• one plenary day or two half-days on location with peers and two trainers (8 hours);
• 2 hours of processing work

Handing in the preparation and processing assignments are required for getting the EC. 

Additional assignment
For an extra 0.2 EC, it is possible to work on an assignment in which you reflect on a feedback conversation with your own Master student. You can sign up for this assignment by the trainers after having taken part in this course.

10 to 25 participants.

Research participation (optional)
Alongside the training, Michèle Gerbrands, PhD candidate, would like to request your participation in her research. Taking part in the study is optional, and it means that you allow your mandatory course assignments to be used for research purposes as well. After signing up for the course, you will receive more information on the research and the option to provide consent for your assignments being used.

Trainer

The trainers of this course are affiliated with the Education Center (Biomedical Sciences) department of the UMC Utrecht, which is part of the GSLS. They have backgrounds in the (biomedical) sciences and/or educational field. They have experience in teaching and supervising BSc and MSc students and/or PhD candidates and a passion for educating others about effective ways of supervision. They strongly advocate for a safe learning environment for both students and supervisors where everyone can thrive at their best.

Course certificate

You will receive a certificate after actively participating during the course sessions, including homework assignments.

This course is free for GSLS PhD candidates. However: free of charge does not mean free of responsibility. Once you have signed up for a course, we expect you to attend. For every late cancellation or no-show we have had to disappoint others who would have liked to attend. This is our policy:

• You may cancel free of charge up to 4 weeks before the start of the course. After this date you can only cancel if you have a GSLS PhD candidate to replace you in the course. Send the name and contact information of your replacement to pcc@uu.nl, at least 2 working days before the start of the course;
• We expect that you actively attend the full course, but at least 80%. It is mandatory to attend the first session. If you are absent the first session you cannot follow the remaining of the course;
• Not meeting the above requirements means you will be charged a no-show fee (€ 98). We will send the invoice after the course has ended. We are unable to make any exceptions, unless you have a valid reason (i.e., illness or death in the family 1^st/2^nd degree or partner). Your supervisor has to send an e-mail to pcc@uu.nl indicating the reason.
