Jessica Merkens is a master's student Neuroscience and Cognition. Aside from that, she is a marathon skater at the highest national and international levels.

She has competed in the Dutch Championships Marathon Skating multiple times, both on man-made ice and natural ice. For this season, she qualified for the Dutch Championships Mass Start as well. This is a new Olympic discipline. She took 16th place at these championships.

In 2014, Jessica already represented Utrecht University in the World University Championships Speed Skating in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In these championships, she secured a bronze medal for Team Pursuit.

In March 2016, Jessica was selected for the World University Championships Speed Skating in Baselga di Pine, Italy. Roughly 150 contestants from 25 countries competed: all were higher-education students. The tournament ended with a gold medal and a bronze medal for the Netherlands in Ladies Mass Start. Jessica won bronze once again!
