Responsible Conduct of Research Year 2
Important
- Year 2 consists of an E-learning module (online) and a plenary meeting. A Solis-id is required for this course, you will not be able to participate in the E-learning module without it! Please visit the FAQ for information on how to apply for a Solis-id. This application process can take up to 3 weeks, so make sure your Solis-id is active before the opening of the E-learning module.
- Deadline finishing the E-learning module: the E-learning module will take approximately 4 hours to finish and contains a number of assignments, the results of which you should bring to the plenary meeting. You should finish the E-learning module at least one week before the date of the final plenary session and all parts (paragraphs) must be completed and checked off. Timely completion of the E-learning module is required for participation and certification. Participants who do not complete the module within the given timeframe will not receive a certificate.
- Twice a year, a fully online edition (E-learning module and plenary meeting) of the course Responsible Conduct of Research year 2 is offered (see course schedule). These online editions are exclusively intended for PhD candidates who live and/or work abroad and are unable to travel to Utrecht. Read more at the section 'Important additional information (!)'.

- Compulsory course for all GSLS PhD Candidates whose PhD tracks start from 1 September 2020 onwards.
- Open for registration to all other GSLS PhD Candidates.
- This course is the second part out of a series of four, which is introduced as compulsory training for PhDs at Utrecht University. You can find more information about the full training here.
Course description
Being a scientist is complicated. You have to deal with responsibilities towards your colleagues, your profession, science in general and society. On top of that, you have to perform state of the art research providing thrilling results and new insights for the life sciences.
This course aims to create awareness of relevant issues in your academic publishing practice and ways to approach them. You will develop insights that can help you on your route to becoming a responsible researcher by completing an E-module. Next, you will engage in meaningful discussions with an international group of PhD candidates during the plenary meeting at the end of this course.
This course is about integrity in academic publication: authorship and peer review. We will focus on these 3 themes:
- Authorship – who qualifies, order, publication strategy.
- Academic publishing – FFP and retraction, predatory journals, dilemma’s and grey areas.
- Reviewing – peer review types, a constructive review.
To know more about misconduct in research and also to know what to expect when talking about authorship. It really helped me to know a better way to decide and discuss the authorship list.
Entrance fee: This course is free for GSLS PhD candidates. Unfortunately we don’t offer this course for participants not part of the GSLS. Our courses tend to be fully booked by GSLS PhD candidates.

After opening, the portal shows how many spots are still available. You can subscribe to the interest list when a course is fully booked or not yet open for registration.
