PhD Day 2024 Scientists of the Future
On July 1st 2024, the 10th edition of the GSLS PhD Day, themed ‘Scientists of the Future’, took place. This event focused on preparing PhD candidates for a future where science and society are more closely connected and the use of AI is more prominent.

The day was opened by Dr. Marc van Mil, educational innovator and National Teacher of the Year 2017. He discussed the importance of Open Science and provided various ideas on how it should be implemented in PhD tracks, as well as ways PhD candidates could make a greater impact on society.
After this kickoff, PhD candidates could choose from eight different workshops to prepare for the future. Enthusiastic trainers discussed how to communicate science in an understandable and attractive way, how to use AI programs to our advantage, how to conduct research sustainably - both for mental health and the planet - and how to connect and collaborate with others in a globalizing society to make a bigger impact.
The AI Bullshit Bingo by SETUP, which followed the workshops, was a fun and engaging way to highlight the entertaining aspects of AI while raising awareness about its consequences in daily life. The day traditionally ended with a delightful BBQ and drinks at the Botanic Gardens.
Many thanks to the organizing committee - Chantal, Maithili, Roos, and Sophie - for this fantastic edition! We hope to see you all at next year’s event!
