What does an Active Learning Space offer you?

An Active Learning Space is a space that optimally facilitates student-centred, active, and collaborative learning.

The layout of ANDRO O.004 consists of 5 large group tables for 6 people each. The tables are electrically height-adjustable and can be used at both sitting- and standing height. The tables are arranged in a circle in the room and, unlike in traditional study group rooms, the teacher stands in the middle. From the centre, the teacher can easily observe the learning process of all groups and ‘join’ all tables to guide students. A monitor is attached to each group table, to which students can connect their (own) laptop via an hdmi/usb cable. Students can thus collaborate on an assignment or project on this monitor.

On the two short sides of this room, whiteboards hang across the entire width, which optimally supports brainstorming and working on ideas. The tables and all chairs are on wheels, making the layout flexible. In addition, 5 height-adjustable ‘wobble stools’ are placed as additional seating options.

The Active Learning Space is explicitly designed to let students actively engage in learning, rather than having the teacher ‘send’ information. Therefore, there is no ‘attention wall’ with a presentation screen/board in this room, nor is there any furniture with a computer for the teacher.

If a teacher does want to give a (short) presentation or share other learning materials, he or she can do so by connecting their own laptop directly to one of the group monitors. The content will then only be visible on that particular screen. Learning content can also be made visible on all screens by both teachers and students by sharing it via Teams. For this, a laptop must be linked to each table that is logged into the same Teams meeting.

Would you like to use this Active Learning Space (or any of the other FLS)? Then email fls@uu.nl. FLS is experimenting with innovative spaces UU-wide. Prior to using these spaces, an orientation meeting will be held to discuss whether your teaching is best suited to this space and what guidance you need. We also ask you to participate in evaluation of this space.
