Hybrid Active Learning Classroom

The evaluation report “Knowledge Development and Teacher Professionalization in Future Learning Spaces” (Dolfing & Dijstelbloem, 2022) outlines user experiences with BOL 2.049. For this evaluation report, digital questionnaires were completed after 5 observed lessons in the HALC.  

The elements that students and teachers felt contributed most to learning:

• Round setup with group tables: It was indicated that the group tables encouraged discussion and collaboration within the group.
• Large screens per group: Working on a large screen helped collaborate on group assignments according to students and teachers. Teachers specifically mentioned that it was also nice that the screens could be shared and that there were whiteboards.
• Central position teacher: This allows the teacher to see all groups well and easily join the group tables for questions and feedback.
• Lots of space: This, according to students and teachers, gives them freedom of movement and room for interaction.
• Hybrid/online capabilities This allows participation of students who otherwise could not attend at all.

The elements that contributed least to learning:

• Technology not functioning optimally
• Contact with other group tables is limited
• Too much distance between teacher and student during the plenary part

Teachers and students would recommend the room in part because of the promoted interaction between students and teacher, because it is a pleasant space to collaborate in, and because teachers have a better view of the students' process.
