UU Reserved Accommodation Programme for Exchange students (February 2025)
The information on this page is for international Exchange students new to the Netherlands who are planning to enrol per February 2025.
Utrecht University has reserved accommodation with SSH Short Stay for new international UU students. Through the UU Reserved Accommodation Programme, Exchange students new to the Netherlands can apply for a furnished room or studio. In order to apply, students must meet the set conditions. Availability is furthermore limited and booking is on a first-come, first-served basis. In short, securing housing through the programme is not guaranteed.

Availability is limited
Finding accommodation through the programme is not guaranteed. Due to the high demand for housing in Utrecht, anticipate that you might not be able to book accommodation this way and explore other ways to find housing before booking opens.
Rental periods are fixed
The rental agreements have fixed start and end dates. It is not possible to rent longer, shorter, or to cancel the agreement prematurely.
5 months only
Erasmus/Exchange students who start their studies in February can apply for one semester (5 months) only.
SSH Short Stay
For Exchange students planning to enrol for one semester per February 2025, the UU Reserved Accommodation Programme offers furnished rooms and studios via housing provider SSH Short Stay. Because the housing is not owned by Utrecht University, contracts are between the tenant and the housing provider.
Types of housing
SSH Short Stay offers furnished shared and private rooms, and furnished studios in several student residence buildings. The accommodations are equipped with basic furniture, such as a bed, a wardrobe, a desk and a chair, and are located in international student residences. Internet is provided in all accommodations.
Shared facilities and good tenancy
When you book a room in a shared house, you share facilities - like the bathroom, kitchen and washing machine - with housemates. As in all common areas, tenants are expected to maintain good behavior regarding noise and cleanliness. Read more about what is expected of tenants in the Netherlands.
Locations
The accommodations reserved with SSH Short Stay are located in various locations in and near Utrecht. All SSH's buildings are within travelling distance of the various university buildings and Utrecht's city centre. All locations, buildings and room types are popular. To increase your booking chances, we advise you not to fixate on one or two locations when booking opens, but to consider all options.
Rental period
Spring Semester Exchange student housing is available for a fixed rental periods of 5 months: 30 January 2025 - 1 July 2025. It is not possible to terminate the contract early or to extend your contract. The tenant has an obligation to pay rent for the entire rental period. Please note that the SSH's rental periods do not necessarily cover entire semesters. Educational activities may be planned before or after the rental period.
Rent allowance
If you are 23 years or older and meet other individual requirements, SSH's private studios are eligible for the government regulated benefit called rent allowance. This allowance could potentially reduce your monthly net rent by up to 412 euros. The rooms with shared facilities are not eligible for rent allowance.
