Improve concentration: studying without a smartphone within reach

Most people have it within reach 24/7: their smartphone. It’s the tool we use to stay connected to the world and quickly look things up. An increasing number of studies show that it’s not only checking social media that distracts you - simply having your phone nearby can already make you less focused. That’s why many secondary schools now use a “home or in your locker” policy. But at university, that rule doesn’t apply. So what does the presence of your smartphone do to your attention and concentration? And how can you make sure your phone doesn’t get in the way of your learning performance?

Recently, the impact of having smartphones present on cognitive performance was studied. Participants were divided into three groups. The first group left their smartphone in another room, while the other groups were allowed to bring their phone (on silent) into the testing room. Participants in the second group had to keep their smartphone in a jacket or bag, and the third group placed it on the table face down. All participants then completed a cognitive test.

Participants in the third group scored significantly lower on the test. The results showed that keeping your smartphone out of sight or out of reach leads to better performance. This was especially true for those who reported being strongly attached to their smartphone: they benefited most from having it out of sight.

Also tempted to check your phone all the time?

So are you also tempted to check your phone all the time? Then create a bit of distance while studying: put your smartphone not only out of sight, but also out of reach. Because we’ve known for a long time that multitasking is a myth.
