Meet the Makers

The Meet the Makers program aims to facilitate meetings and conversations between academic researchers and students, and makers – i.e. artists, curators, dramaturges, designers or other creative practitioners and professionals within the wider field of arts & culture.
What did the collaboration entail?
This collaboration facilitates meetings that happen approximately once a month. In these meetups about 20 students, UU researchers and creative professionals (artists, curators, designers, etc.) come together to discuss how creative and artistic-research practices and academic research can productively meet and possibly collaborate in responding to current societal and ecololical challenges posed by processes such as technologisation, digitisation, datafication and algorithmisation.
The Nederlands Filmfestival (NFF) wanted to offer a platform for creative professionals to have dialogues with students and academic researchers, which could contribute to their potential for outreach and collaboration. The UU saw potential in this platform for a discussion between creative professionals, students, and academic researchers, to enrich teaching and research, and to foster aims of outreach and collaboration in those domains.
Purpose of collaboration in education
To enrich the (master) programs with opportunities for students to enter into conversation, dialogue and possibly future collaboration with cultural professionals. To enrich their understanding of the cultural field and their capacity for reflection on the synergies between creative practices and research practices. This gives students insight in, and reflection on the role of the arts in public debates about contemporary societal challenges. It is also a knowledge exchange between researchers and artistic practice.
(Intended) result
This is an ongoing collaboration in which they aim to enrich the (master) programs with opportunities for students to enter into conversation, dialogue and possibly future collaboration with cultural professionals and to enrich their understanding of the cultural field and their capacity for reflection on the synergies between creative practices and research practices.
