Events and community

Are you reflecting on your own teaching practice and would you like to share your findings with colleagues? Are you curious to hear about the experiences of colleagues at other higher education institutions? You can take part in conferences and other events both within and outside Utrecht University.

You can meet colleagues who also conduct educational research in person at various events. At the annual Education Festival in March, lecturers present their educational research findings via poster presentations. Higher Education Research symposia take place in April and October. At these networking events, you can meet other researchers, disseminate the findings of higher education research and share expertise on topics such as research methods. The symposia focus on a single current educational topic and offer the opportunity to present or explore research on that theme.

In addition to these events organised by the CAT, educational researchers can also participate in numerous national and international educational research conferences.

Would you like to discuss options with us to find a suitable conference for you? Or do you have any additions to this list? Please do let us know at owoz@uu.nl.

Below, we highlight a number of recurring events.

Scholarly Snacking

Every first Thursday of the month, you can participate in our Scholarly Snacking meeting. During this informal lunch meeting, researchers, lecturers and PhD students from higher education come together to exchange ideas and gain inspiration. Enjoy the light lunch we provide while a researcher shares his or her current project, and then join in the conversation. Together, we reflect on the practical implications of the research and explore opportunities for further research. Scholarly snacking is synonymous with lively discussions, new perspectives and a growing community of curious minds. If you wish, you can also present your own educational scholarship and research project to fellow lecturers.

Writing retreat

Twice a year, in January and July, the CAT organises a four-day writing retreat for educational researchers. Step out of your daily routine and spend a few focused days writing in a supportive environment. Here you can concentrate on refining your paper or drafting a research proposal. Surrounded by colleagues, you will find both inspiration and structure to help you advance your project. During the retreat, you can receive advice from an educational advisor every day.

Peer learning groups

Every month, the CAT organises peer learning groups for lecturers who receive a SoTL grant. In these sessions, you share your experiences, challenges and struggles and help each other to conduct research into your teaching. The sessions are facilitated by an educational advisor.

Do you gave an idea for a nice event or would you like to think along? Let us know via owoz@uu.nl.

Inspiration and community

Educational scholarship and research is something you do yourself, but not alone. The CAT offers an online community of fellow teachers who also conduct educational scholarship and research. In this Teams environment, teachers can ask each other questions, share information and generate ideas. Click here to join the Teams environment!
