Educational Visiting Scholars
The Centre for Academic Teaching and Learning (CAT) at Utrecht University welcomes applications from visiting academics who wish to collaborate on topics related to academic teaching and learning. Visits can range from two weeks to three months.
What is a Visiting Scholar?
The Visiting Scholar position is intended for academic staff employed at a recognised university who are interested in developing or strengthening collaboration with teaching staff at Utrecht University.
During their stay, Visiting Scholars become part of the CAT community. They are invited to engage with Utrecht University staff and participate in CAT activities, events, and discussions.
Purpose of the Visit
Applicants are expected to define a clear goal for their visit. This may include:
- Participation in teaching activities
- Professional or skills development
- Educational innovation projects
- Research in higher education
- Other scholarly activities related to academic teaching and learning
All visits should involve collaboration with Utrecht University teaching staff. Please note that the visit should be aimed at collaborations or corporation within the field of education, e.g., educational leadership, educational scholarship, higher education research.
The visiting Scholars should have their own financial support.
Selection Process
Applications are reviewed by a selection committee consisting of CAT board members and a member of the CAT management team. In some cases, an interview (online or in person) may be part of the procedure. Applicants will be notified of the outcome within approximately two months after submission.
After the Visit
At the end of the visit, Visiting Scholars will submit a short written report of their experience to the CAT board, including a summary/testimonial for the CAT website.

We recommend contacting a potential Utrecht University counterpart in advance to discuss your plans and collaboration. We strongly encourage the application to be submitted by the UU employee.
Scholars who wish to visit the Centre need to have a counterpart (liaison) at Utrecht University. Any affiliated scholar of the CAT (board members, Senior Fellows or affiliated faculty) can function as a counterpart during the visit. Requests for a stay as Educational Visiting Scholar will be submitted by the Visiting Scholar, together with their UU counterpart.
The CAT actually just offers a space to work (a desk) and to organise a community event or workshop for the teaching community. Because we have limited resources to offer visitors an inspiring visit, this collaboration is to be carried out by the UU counterpart ideally an academic with a focus on education or educational scholarship and research.
