Educational advice

The educational advisors at the Centre for Academic Teaching and Learning (CAT) and Educational Advice and Training (O&T) offer didactic and practical support to teachers who want to improve or innovate their teaching. SoTL roadmap and Ulearning module

The Roadmap for SoTL is a practical step-by-step plan that guides you through the eight steps of setting up your (first) SoTL research project. You will learn to think critically about your teaching and its effect on students. Relevant information, tips and specific questions will help you to translate your ideas into practical research in a structured manner.

A more comprehensive version of the roadmap is available as an e-module, which you can use to develop a plan for your SoTL project. This will give you insight into potential problems you may encounter in your own teaching and how you can solve them in a structured manner. Step by step, you will examine your own teaching practices. Educational and subject-specific literature will help you to better understand your teaching and your students' learning and to substantiate your project plan.

Scientific theories and literature

Are you new to conducting research in education? Research in education can be challenging at first. We are therefore happy to provide you with tips and guidance to help you successfully launch your research project and ground it in the relevant literature.

As with other types of research, it is important in educational research that research projects are grounded in theories from the (educational) literature. To learn more about educational research and theories, we recommend that you read up on the various interventions, outcomes and mechanisms that may play a role in higher education. To familiarise yourself with education research, you could, for example, start by reading an accessible article or book on learning or teaching within your own discipline.

This table will help you find entry points to relevant literature for your research project and learn more about educational theories.

Please note: In most cases, the term ‘SoTL’ does not yield useful results in search engines. You should therefore use search terms related to the learning outcomes, mechanisms, interventions and contexts that are central to your research project. For example, ‘formative assessment in a bachelor’s course’ or ‘the effect of worked-out examples’.
