Community Engaged Learning course
Utrecht University is committed to socially engaged education, also known as Community Engaged Learning (CEL). CEL is experiential education in which students, lecturers and social partners work together on social issues. CEL requires different skills from both students and lecturers. The CEL course supports teachers in delivering and developing CEL education.
What will you do?
The course consists of six meetings and one follow-up day. The course is supervised by trainers from Educational Development & Training. During the course, we will explore together the characteristics of CEL, explore what cooperation with social partners can look like and you will work on the (further) development of your own CEL education.
Topics such as assessment, reflection and ethical questions are also covered. Participants learn with and from each other by studying CEL together, exchanging experiences and developing into a network of teacher-experts in the field of CEL. You will receive a certificate as proof of participation after completing the course.
For whom?
The course is designed for lecturers at UU, UCU, UCR or UMCU who are involved in CEL teaching or will soon start working with CEL.
You will get the most out of the learning course if:
- You already have (outline) ideas for CEL education.
- You know that this idea can have a place within the curriculum in the near future. It is important to coordinate this idea and your participation in the programme with your manager and/or education director.
- You have decision-making powers to be able to implement (small) changes within the curriculum / subject.
- You have at least 2 years of teaching and/or practical experience.
If you are already more experienced in the field of CEL, then the advanced teaching course CEL might suit you better. Read more about the advanced teaching course.
Tip: You can always test your ideas for CEL education with the CEL ambassador of your own faculty!
