Comeniusprogramme

The Comeniusprogramme stimulates innovation in Dutch higher education. The grants and fellowships enable professionals in higher education to implement their ideals and ideas in practice. By demonstrably valuing excellent and inspired teaching, the ministry of education is keen to contribute to more variety in the careers of teachers and researchers at universities and universities of applied sciences. Each year teachers can apply by submitting their proposal. The Centre for Academic Teaching and Learning supports teachers with preparing their proposal.

The Comeniusprogramme offers the following grants:

  • Teaching Fellows: €50.000, one-year project, small-scale innovation,
  • Senior Fellow: €100.000, two-year project, innovation in a complete degree programme,
  • Leadership Fellow: €500.000, three-year project, innovation in one or more faculties or a complete institution.

The ‘Fellows’ are distinguished: not based on their quality as a teacher or educational leader but on their experience and their impact on education. These Teaching Fellows are not to be confused with the Fellows of the Centre for Academic Teaching and Learning (the name of this programme was changed from Teaching Fellow to Senior Fellow programme in November 2018). This latter Senior Fellow programme is meant as a career track towards professorship with emphasis on education.

In 2021, the Comenius programme will have four themes, namely 'The first 100 days of the student, 'Working on societal issues', 'Succesful graduation' and an free theme on the subject of Fit for the future.

Senior Fellow grant: only one Senior Fellowship can be nominated per faculty. Most faculties therefore organise an internal selection procedure. Contact your faculty's head of Acadmic Affairs for the internal deadlines of your faculty.

The deadlines for the call for 2023 will be shared here, as soon as they are known. These are expected during late spring 2022.
