Advanced teaching course Community Engaged Learning

Socially engaged education, also known as Community Engaged Learning (CEL), has been a focus of the UU for several years. Meanwhile, more and more UU lecturers have experience with this type of education in which students, lecturers and social partners work together on issues from society. This Advanced teaching course offers experienced CEL teachers the opportunity to jointly explore a CEL-specific theme in more depth. In this course, we also take a look into each other's kitchen and work on making new insights accessible to the broader CEL community.

What will you do?

The Advanced teaching course comprises several sub-aspects:

  1. Together with others, you will systematically investigate a self-chosen CEL-specific theme. This may be substantive or didactic in nature. Based on literature, inspiring examples and cooperation with social partners and students, you try out different approaches in your own CEL education. The shared experiences and reflections on these experiments lead to a better understanding of the chosen CEL theme.
  2. You work on your own personal learning questions around CEL education. You do this by reflecting on the experiences within professionalisation yourself and with each other.

The advanced programme consists of group meetings in which partners and students can also participate. In addition, you form a duo with another experienced teacher, take part in each other's CEL course and reflect on those experiences. Within the course, there is plenty of room to bring in your own wishes and needs for the content of the meetings.

For whom

This Advanced teaching course is intended for CEL teachers who have experience in developing and teaching CEL courses. Participants coordinate at least 1 course centred on CEL in academic year '24-'25.

It is not a requirement that participants in the Advanced teaching course have previously taken the regular CEL course. The regular CEL learning course aims to support teachers in (further) developing their own CEL course. While the knowledge and skills learned here are assumed to be known for advanced professionalisation, they may also have been acquired by teachers in their own practice.

The language of communication during meetings is Dutch or English, depending on the preferred language of interested teachers.

Maximum number of participants: 12. We aim for an equal distribution among the faculties. We will take this into account in the selection of participants.

Time investment

The total time investment for lecturers is approximately 60 hours, during one academic year, from June 2024 to June 2025.
