Tropical & Butterfly greenhouses

Utrecht University Botanic Gardens are set to receive new greenhouses. The Botanic Gardens, including the Greenhouses, form a living research and teaching site for Utrecht University. New greenhouses are essential to continue vital research into biodiversity and other topics, and to preserve the tropical plant collection from Central and South America. The new greenhouses are expected to open in mid-2028 at the earliest.

Greenhouses are closed

The Tropical greenhouses, as well as the Butterfly greenhouse, will be closed for an extended period and are scheduled for demolition in 2026. The large plant collection was relocated after the closure on 1 December 2025. Suitable (temporary) housing will be provided for the remaining plants, as well as for the living butterflies and frogs.
