“With its international scope you get in contact with people from all over the world to share experiences and discover new insights.”
I already started looking at Bachelor’s programmes very early because I knew it would be difficult to choose. As I am someone with different interests, ranging from politics to chemistry to economics as well, I had no idea where my professional future would lie. However, from the moment I discovered Global Sustainability Science (GSS), I was sold. During the Student for a Day event I got the opportunity to experience the passionate, warm environment and to be surrounded by open-minded people who share the same values as myself.
At GSS everyone strives for a better future and is not afraid to get their hands dirty for it. The Bachelor’s offers five specialized tracks but overlap remains due to which you get to learn about multiple disciplines. I chose the governance track to focus on the social aspects of sustainability and the wellbeing of the community, and I have never felt more at home!
GSS offers much flexibility in your study plan, electives, minors, and I am now even thinking of studying abroad next year! If you are someone who feels responsibility towards the planet and your fellow humans, want to solve and prevent problems, then this is the perfect programme for you!
''The international environment allows for a mixture of dynamic ideas to always circulate in discussion.''
Are you concerned about our planet's future? Are you interested in gaining a broad knowledge about the sustainability issues around the world and become part of the solution? It is an exhilarating journey through learning about the issues, how to solve them and then contributing to change at a local and global scale. The broad base of your core subjects combined with your specific track knowledge becomes a powerhouse when working together to solve sustainability issues. Additionally, the electives provide you with the flexibility to explore new subjects and apply your skills outside the field of sustainability.
You will be surrounded by students who come from various walks of life, each with their own take on sustainability. This international environment allows for a mixture of dynamic ideas to always circulate in discussion.
Global Sustainability Science, along with its driven students and passionate teachers, equips you with the tools to launch you forth and become part of the driving force of sustainable development making this a perfect beginning for anyone interested in sustainability!
''Every year, you have courses in which you work together with people from different fields, to analyse and try to solve sustainability problems from all directions.''
During the last years of my high school career, I started thinking about possible Bachelor's studies. This was a challenge for me; I was interested in many different things, ranging from physics to history. I therefore started to look at relatively broad studies in which specialization was still possible. By accident, the Bachelor's programme Global Sustainability Science (GSS) crossed my path, a fairly new study with many different directions.
I did not regret my decision for a second after starting this Bachelor's. Besides the fact that GSS is a broad study - you can focus on the political aspects but also on the more physical energy transition - there is also a lot of interaction between the directions. Every year, you have courses in which you work together with people from different fields, to analyse and try to solve sustainability problems from all directions.
Are you interested in sustainability and in working with students from all over the world to contribute to the solution? Then GSS is the study programme for you! In addition to the many interesting lectures and work groups, there is also a lot of space for contact with your fellow students. Within GSS I have found my place among all friendly and open-minded students. I'm positive you will find your place here too!
''I do not want to solve problems, I want to prevent them.''
During my high school years I reflected a lot about what my goals and wishes were for the future. It took me a while to figure out what I really wanted to do. At one point I was torn between studying medicine and Global Sustainability Science. But one night the solution appeared right in front of me: I do not want to solve problems, I want to prevent them. It was not difficult anymore once I had that realisation. GSS is aimed toward sustainability; it is something meant for future generations of humanity, but requires us to invest in that future.
This future-oriented perspective was not the only thing that drew me towards Global Sustainability Sciences. Ever since I was a little kid, I have always been interested in a lot of topics. This broad interest gets satisfied by the multidisciplinary approach of our study. Being able to combine elements of social sciences with exact sciences, and applying that theory to brainstorm about ideas that might save our planet is amazing. Studying something that fits me that well in a city like Utrecht where parties are abound is everything that I wished for when choosing my study.
