A global language

Our students will answer all your questions!

Nearly a billion people use English in their everyday communication. Approximately 400 million are native English speakers, which makes English a true world language. A thorough understanding of its cultures and histories will allow you to engage with people on a global scale.

Experience the Bachelor

What will you learn?

Perfecting your English is one aim, but you also learn how the language actually works as a linguistic system, how the processes of learning English in the brain are different for children and adults, and how and why the language has changed over time and is used differently depending on location, or social factors like age, gender and self-identity. You also explore the language by analysing thought-provoking literature. English after all is the language of many world-famous authors past and present. You study the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world and the influences of cultural, social and political developments on the English language and its literatures and vice versa.

to the Study programme

Ever since I was a kid, I have loved books and the English language. My dad and I would have this little tradition of him asking me simple questions and me responding in English to build my language skills. English Language and Culture thus felt like a natural choice.

World Englishes

You will learn how to modify your pronunciation towards either a British or American standard accent. We see this as a useful skill, but at the same time the degree takes a World Englishes approach to the language. In fact, the cultural and social issues involved in assigning an elevated status to native speaker varieties are explored in various courses in the programme.
