Molecular life sciences students in lab

Are you fascinated by life at the molecular and cellular level? And do you have a broad interest in and keen talent for natural science? The new interdisciplinary Bachelor’s programme Molecular and Biophysical Life Sciences (MBLS) - start date September 2021* - combines perspectives on life from the disciplines biology, chemistry, physics and the pharmaceutical sciences. You will learn fundamental principles and research methods of the various disciplines.

I would really like to learn more about how and why molecules in the cell move around and how this drives the processes of life.
Hannah Verwei, MLS student member of the MBLS curriculum committee

As a student member of the curriculum committee, Hannah Verwei was partly responsible of reshaping the succesfull Molecular Life Sciences studypath into Molecular and Biophysical Life Sciences. She explains what fascinates her about this new Bachelor's programme.

Inhoud - Content

Do you want to know how proteins function as catalyst or act as molecular motors? How eyes see, brain cells communicate and molecules of our immune system protect us from disease? Would you like to be able to change DNA and create proteins or organisms with new properties? Or synthesize molecules that could act as an antibiotic?

MBLS presents an international English-taught programme with a strong link to modern life science research. You will learn fundamental principles and research methods of the various disciplines. You will be taught ànd use both basic methods and advanced technologies: live-cell imaging and super-resolution microscopy to study cellular organization, cryoelectron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and NMR spectroscopy to visualize biomolecules in atomic detail, and bioinformatics to explore the vast amount of data produced in the modern life sciences. After completing your basic training you decide for yourself in which direction(s) you will specialise. Through its international and interdisciplinary character MBLS provides an excellent basis for a broad range of Master’s programmes in the Netherlands and elsewhere in the world.

Honours

It is possible for you to participate in an honours programme. It will provide you with stimulating challenges on top of a regular university curriculum. These will give you the opportunity to deepen and broaden your knowledge, to get you acquainted with research at an early stage of your studies, to have the chance to explore across the borders of your discipline, and to gain international experience. All the students of the Science Faculty honours programmes are part of the Science Honours Academy where they work together on a wide range of activities within an interdisciplinary component.

Want to know more? Please check the 'Yes, I'm interested in the Honours programme brochure'  box when you request a regular brochure (see button below).

  • You obtained your secondary school diploma in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA or South Africa, or
  • You obtained an International Baccalaureate Diploma or European Baccalaureate Diploma (taught in English)

For your application it is not necessary to have passed the English test already. In Osiris Online Application you will be able to indicate the date on which you will take the exam, that will be sufficient. The results of the test can be forwarded later, but before 15 June (non-EU/EEA students) or 1 September (EU/EEA students).

What if I am missing one of the required entry requirements?

The Admissions Office determines whether your diploma is equivalent to a Dutch high school diploma. If the level is insufficient and/or subject(s) are missing, they will advise you how to remedy this. There are private institutions, e.g Boswell-BètaWisMon or CCVX where you can gain your qualification prior to the start of the programme. You will need to have met all the programme's subject requirements (including the language test) and send a hardcopy of your diploma(s) to the Admissions Office before 1 September. If you require an entry visa/residence permit for study purposes you have to:

  • Obtain your secondary school diploma before 1 September
  • Meet all the other subject requirements before 15 June
Matching

Online matching for non-Dutch residents

If you live abroad, matching is voluntary though highly recommended. If you decide to participate, please send us an e-mail. You will then receive detailed information about how to proceed. For example instructions as how to prepare for the online activities and information about the exact date and time.

Questions?

If you have any further questions regarding the matching procedure, please contact us.
