Why Utrecht University

The Best in the Netherlands

According to the 2017 edition of the Selections Guide for Universities (Keuzegids Universiteiten 2017), students have voted Utrecht University’s Bachelor’s programme in Literary Studies the best in the country. The lecturers, in particular, came in for a lot of praise. For its part, Elsevier also called Utrecht University’s programme the cream of the crop.

Emphasis on Comparison

Utrecht University’s programme in Literary Studies focuses on the comparative perspective. You will compare works of literature from various cultures and ages, ranging from antiquity to the present era. You will investigate how literature has been incorporated into film and new media and how literature and other forms of art affect each other. But it is not just about the courses you will be taking. You will also venture into the world behind the scenes of works of literature, by means of excursions, work placements and research.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that this degree has given me a different perspective on the world.
Thijs Joores, Literary Studies student

International flavour

Your lecturers hail from the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, the United States and India. This mix of nationalities is interesting to both students and academics  and means that many of the literary conferences and symposiums we organise have an international flavour.

Studying Abroad

Due to the international nature of the programme, a temporary stay at a university abroad will be a good addition to the programme you will take at Utrecht University. Our students have attended universities all over the world, from Bangor to Kyoto.

City of Literature

For lovers of literature, Utrecht is the place to be. As of 2018, Unesco has awarded Utrecht the status of “City of Literature”. The many activities this produces are found at: https://www.cityofliterature.nl/. The organisation behind all this, the “Literatuurhuis”, is one of the societal partners of our programme.

Euphorion Study Society

SV Euphorion (in Dutch) is the department of Literary Studies’ own study society. Its members regularly organise activities for literary scholars, such as lectures, book reviews, study trips and parties. They will also keep you updated on major events in the literary community.
