Matching

Do we match?

At the Linguistics department Utrecht University (UU) we realise that prospective students have a much higher chance of completing the programme of study successfully, when they choose one that really suits them. To help you make that decision, we offer a so-called Matching procedure, which will give you a better idea about the methods, approach and level of our Linguistics programme. As part of the Matching procedure you read academic articles, watch short web lectures and make a written assignment, on which you receive feedback from one of our teachers.

Procedure for Dutch residents (non-Dutch residents, see below)

If you are a resident in the Netherlands, the Matching procedure is compulsory in order to start the Linguistics programme.

  1. Form and letter of motivation

Once you have registered for the Linguisctics programme via Studielink and your application has been approved by the admissions office, you receive an invitation for the Matching procedure. You fill out the matching form, which includes a letter of motivation, emphasising why you want to study Linguisctics at Utrecht University, what your expectations are, and refer to strengths and weaknesses.

  1. Matching meeting for Dutch residents

After submitting your form you will be invited to participate in one of the Matching meetings that takes place on Monday, April 6, 2020 and on Friday, May 29, 2020. Two weeks before the matching activity, you will receive an invitation by email to take part in the matching activity. This email will tell you where to find the information about the location, the programme and how you can prepare for this activity.

Based on your experience during the Matching meeting and the feedback you received from the teacher, you can make your deliberated final decision about starting the Linguistics programme at Utrecht University. Please note that you will also need to meet the programme’s entry requirements (see: https://www.uu.nl/bachelors/en/linguistics/entry-requirements/). If, on the other hand, you come to the conclusion that Linguistics is not the right course for you, we kindly ask you to withdraw your registration via Studielink.

For prospective Linguistics students who live abroad, participation in the Matching meeting at Utrecht is not obligatory, but certainly possible. If you would like to attend one of these meetings, please send an email to matching.gw@uu.nl.

Questions?

If you have any further questions regarding the Linguistics programme’s Matching procedure, please send an email to matching.gw@uu.nl. General information you can find at https://www.uu.nl/bachelors/en/general-information/international-students/application-and-admission/matching.

Online matching for non-Dutch residents

If you are not a resident in the Netherlands, Matching is voluntary though highly recommended. Not taking part in the Matching procedure will have no consequences for your registration or eligibility to start the Linguistics programme. If you decide to participate, please send an email to matching.gw@uu.nl. You will then receive a Matching form that you need to fill out, which includes a letter of motivation. Once you have submitted this form, you get access to our online learning environment, Blackboard. There you will find instructions as to how to prepare for the online meeting and information about the exact date and time.

Based on your experience during the online Matching and the feedback you received from the teacher, you can make your deliberated final decision about starting the Linguistics programme. Please note that you will also need to meet the programme’s entry requirements (see: https://www.uu.nl/bachelors/en/linguistics/entry-requirements/).

If, on the other hand, you reach the conclusion that Linguistics is not the right course for you, we kindly ask you to withdraw your registration via Studielink.
