Outstanding university

Studying at Utrecht University means studying at one of the world's best universities. The Shanghai Ranking ranks Utrecht University as 1st in the Netherlands and 65nd in the world. The Best Global Universities Ranking ranks Utrecht University as 1st and 15th in Europe. The Times Higher Education Ranking places the university at number 62. The university has also been ranked as 35th worldwide by the Taiwan ranking, published by the Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council. This ranking also places Utrecht University ahead of all other Dutch universities.

International environment

As an international student, you’re in good company at Utrecht University. Every year, approximately 1,500 international students come to Utrecht University to take English-taught degree programmes and other courses. With some 118 nationalities working and studying closely together, students learn to operate in an international environment from the outset, which is essential for scientists and scholars in this increasingly globalised world.


Where is Utrecht University? The university is based at three different locations in Utrecht. In the charming, historic city centre you’ll find the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Law, Economics & Governance.

Just outside the city, the Utrecht Science Park/De Uithof campus is home to the faculties of Science, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Geosciences and Social & Behavioural Sciences. This campus is distinguished by striking contemporary architecture, including a new University Library designed by renowned Dutch architect Wiel Arets.

Midway between these two campuses is the International Campus Utrecht. Here you'll find the Utrecht University School of Economics (USE) and the University College Utrecht (UCU). University College Utrecht is a small-scale international honours college specialising in the liberal arts and sciences which occupies a quiet, tree-lined campus across the street from the house of the famed architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld.

Utrecht University also has a new fourth campus in Middelburg, in the southwesten Netherlands, where its international honours college, University College Roosevelt, is based. UCR offers Bachelor’s degree programmes in the liberal arts and sciences.
