U.S.E Seminar Tim Barmby (Newcastle University)

U.S.E Seminar met arbeidseconoom Tim Barmby getiteld: Labour Economic History from Below: Agency and Incentives in 19th Century Metal Mining.

This seminar reports on some recent work on a particular group of workers, metal miners, in Britain in the 19th century. It considers the nature of the labour contracts which existed at this time, and the way in which miners’ specific human capital may have been part of the process generating the particular arrangements seen. The paper tries to argue that paying particular attention to micro aspects of the arrangements, in the methodological approach, allows a wider perspective to be taken on the social and economic development seen at this time, which may be helpful in building more useful interdisciplinary approaches.
