SG: Jane Austen - Pride and Prejudice

From the 2005 blockbuster with Keira Knightley to de Bollywood version about an Indian family with four daughters: many will know Austen's story from one of its film or TV adaptations. It set the bar for swoonworthy romance. According to literary scholar Dr Barnita Bagchi (UU) the actual text has more to offer, as a sharp satire on love, marriage and social class. How did readers interpret the book when it first came out? Does that differ from the way we read it today?
