History

Utrecht University, established in 1636, has a long history and a rich tradition. Reminders of the University's history can be found throughout the city, in the form of buildings, gardens and street names. Despite its focus on the future, Utrecht University does not lose sight of the past. The institution cherishes its history in the form of precious library collections, museums, accessible databases and active historiography.

Dies Natalis

Utrecht University’s anniversary, Dies Natalis, is celebrated in the Dom Church on 26 March.

Start of the Academic Year 

Each year, the official start of Utrecht University's academic year is marked in a special ceremony in the University Hall (Academiegebouw) in early September.
On Monday 3 September 2012 the official start of Utrecht University's academic year is marked in a special ceremony in the University Hall (Academiegebouw). This year, the event will also feature the opening of the University Library (City Centre) and a tribute to Yvonne van Rooy.

Five-year anniversary (lustrum)

The University also traditionally celebrates every fifth anniversary. In 2011, Utrecht University commemorated its 375th anniversary, or 75^th five-year anniversary, which was marked by a festive dies celebration on 25 March 2011.

Presentation of royal medals 

At various Dutch universities - including Utrecht University - tradition dictates that royal medals for the institution’s employees are presented by the President of the Executive Board rather than the local mayor.

4 May Memorial Day

Each year, the University commemorates the members of the academic community who died in the period between 1940 and 1945, during a special ceremony at the entrance of the University Hall Auditorium.
