16 May 2011: Symposium 'Our common future / future of the commons', Aula, Academiegebouw

Who owns the fish in the oceans, the tropical jungle or the farmlands here in the Netherlands? And who, in this globalised world, is responsible for managing and sustaining them? The past century taught us that neither government nor market successfully managed our scarce natural resources. Is the collective a better option?
Symposium 'Our common future / future of the commons'Dutch examples such as the district water boards and the cooperative bank show that there are alternatives. Many societies have ‘commons’: communally managed land. Is this approach the way forward for care for people, the environment and nature?

The symposium is hosted by Studium Generale in collaboration with Institutions of the Open Society and the Utrecht Centre for Earth and Sustainability.
