Utrecht University created the position of Distinguished Professor in 2001. Distinguished Professors are excellent scientists who demonstrate multi-disciplinary vision and charisma. They ensure innovative teaching and research and are given a free hand to carry this out. They are affiliated with specific research programmes or Faculties.
