Veni grant for Arie van Steensel
How did cooperation between late-medieval townsmen result in strong social cohesion? This will be explored by Dr. Arie van Steensel at Utrecht University. He was awarded a NWO Veni grant to conduct postdoctoral research for three years at the Faculty of Humanities.

Niels Bosma in expert group European Commission
Niels Bosma has been selected as a member of an expert group on social entrepreneurship to the European Commission. This EU-advisory group, called "Groupe d'experts de la Commission sur l'entrepreneuriat social" (GECES) is made up of representatives of the Member States, local authorities, social entrepreneurs' organisations, the banking and finance sector and the academic and university sector.

Summer School Entrepreneurship
Which business models developed in Europe and why were they successful? What are the consequences and challenges of globalization and the rise of new economies for European entrepreneurship? These are the key questions of The Utrecht Summer School course History of Business Systems and Entrepreneurship in Europe  from 30 July 2012 – 10 August 2012. During this two-week course international students explore Dutch and European entrepreneurs from a historical approach. Students participate in seminars and get lectures from academic professionals and senior managers from Dutch corporations.

Tussen 24 januari en 15 maart kunnen onderzoekers van het focusgebied Origins and Impacts of Institutions weer aanvragen indienen voor subsidie vanuit het focusgebied.

Oproep tot voorstel voor IOS workshop
Dit jaar hebben we data gereserveerd voor nog nader in te vullen workshops. De bedoeling is dat de workshops de mogelijkheid bieden voor een gedachtenwisseling over een onderzoeksaanvraag, of onderzoek op basis van een paper, liefst met referenten.

IOS zaaigeld toegekend aan 10 projecten
Het IOS zaaigeld van de vierde ronde is toegekend aan 10 verschillende projecten waaronder een project over de handhaving van Europese financiële normen, het wonder van West-Brabant, politie en sociale media en de samenleving tussen markt en staat.

IOS houdt succesvolle discussiemiddag over Publieksrechtelijke Bedrijfsorganisatie (PBO)
Op 25 oktober j.l. organiseerde het IOS een discussiemiddag over de legitimiteit van de schappen waaraan werd deelgenomen door vertegenwoordigers van de product- en bedrijfschappen, de politiek, de SER en de PBO-kritische Nieuwe Vrije Agrarische Federatie.

Symposium 'De institutionele verbouwing van Nederland'
Hoe zal Nederland uit de huidige crisis komen, welke kant zal de verbouwing van onze samenleving opgaan? Wat is de diagnose van de onderliggende problemen en welke hervormingen gaan we nu inzetten als reactie daarop? Daarover organiseert het kenniscentrum Instituties van de Open Samenleving (IOS) op 22 maart een symposium. Sprekers zijn onder andere FNV-voorzitter Agnes Jongerius, rector magnificus Bert van der Zwaan, dr. Tine de Moor, dr. Erik Stam en prof. dr. Jan Luiten van Zanden.

Onderzoekspresentatie ‘Alternatives of parliamentary democracy’
Op 19 april 2012 wordt een presentatie gegeven van de bevindingen van het project ‘Alternatives of parliamentary democracy. The Netherlands in a European comparative perspective 1880 to the present’, dat van 2007 tot en met 2012 wordt uitgevoerd door Utrechtse historici en bestuurskundigen in het kader van het NWO-programma Omstreden Democratie.

Conference 'Design and Dynamics of Institutions for Collective Action' in honour of Prof. Elinor Ostrom
From 29 November to 1 December 2012 a three-day conference will be held at Utrecht University on the theme of the ‘Design and Dynamics of Institutions for Collective Action’. The conference will be held in honour of Nobel Prize winner Prof. Elinor Ostrom, who will be an honorary visiting professor at Utrecht University at the time of the conference and will be giving a public lecture in the afternoon of 29 November.
