Drug Innovation

For a large number of life-threatening and chronic diseases, effective drugs are still sorely lacking. The development of these drugs requires ground-breaking exploratory research into bio-active molecules for disease treatment based on key insights in the molecular processes underlying diseases.

In close cooperation with groups in other Utrecht University focus areas, we therefore concentrate on identifying possible targets for pharmacological intervention and on generating new molecules, methods, concepts and approaches, which are indispensable for drug research and development in the pharmaceutical industry. Other research themes in the focus area Drug Innovation are the design of more efficient delivery systems for drugs and the monitoring of recently introduced new drugs to guarantee safe and optimal medicine use in society.

With our expertise in the molecular and life sciences as well as in medical and veterinary research, we want to provide a knowledge platform on drugs which will make us an attractive partner for academic and industrial researchers.
