Scientific Computing

Please note: From September 2011 this Master's programme will be integrated in the programme Mathematical Sciences.

Societal relevance

Scientific Computing is a fast-growing, highly interdisciplinary field that brings together methods from numerical analysis, high-performance computing and various application fields; from climate and weather prediction to the evolution of the economy and stock market. Because of the relevance in diverse areas of life it plays an increasingly important role in our society.

Diverse application areas

Scientific Computing is the area of research that provides better simulation tools aimed at many different applications. During the programme, you will learn to use the mathematical tools needed to tackle everyday problems efficiently. You will be able to practice applying generic solutions to a variety of application areas and provide tools for numerous experimental devices, such as sensors, sequencing machines, and many more.

Solid fundament

Converting data into knowledge requires sophisticated algorithms and computer programs, with a high mathematical content. The computations involved are often huge and therefore, expertise in scientific computing is in high demand. The Master’s programme Scientific Computing at Utrecht University will provide a solid fundament for your future career in scientific research, industry or management.
