Specialised knowledge in a broad context
From transactions in the housing market to top-level bonuses in the banking industry, and from rising taxation to the international credit crisis, economics is no longer a straightforward matter of money and finance. Today, economics is a multifaceted issue that affects politics, society and even laws on a worldwide scale – and that’s why you need more than a straightforward knowledge of the subject. Utrecht University School of Economics, or USE, offers a two-year Research Master’s degree in Multidisciplinary Economics that is specifically designed to give you both the specialised knowledge and expertise that you need for a career in economics and the multidisciplinary context that will help you to apply that knowledge in the real world.
Gaining key skills
The MSc in Multidisciplinary Economics gives you a unique qualification to work in economics at a high level. Across the course of two years, you will:
Receive training in economic research and analysis by top researchers at Utrecht University School of Economics (USE);
Gain a sound knowledge of quantitative methods, micro- and macroeconomics, finance and financial markets, international and public economics, labour economics and organisational economics;
Get involved in research projects at the Tjalling C. Koopmans Institute (TKI), the research institute of Utrecht University School of Economics (USE), and pursue your own research interests;
Explore economics in relation to a secondary discipline (selected from history, geography, law or social sciences) and broaden your understanding of the impact that the institutional, historical and spatial dimensions of an economic problem can have.
Together with the University of Groningen, Faculty of Economics and Business, USE provides graduates and PhD students in economics with a flexible, high-quality and comprehensive teaching programme. During the second year of the programme, you have the opportunity to follow a series of specialised courses in Utrecht and Groningen and learn about the very latest developments across the field of economics.
The gateway to Europe
Utrecht – often dubbed the ‘gateway to Europe’ – offers an ideal location in which to study for an MSc in Economics. The Netherlands is home to some of the world’s leading trading companies and financial institutions. The Multidisciplinary Economics programme gives you the opportunity to visit some of these, listen to guest speakers, and above all, build up professional contacts at major organisations such as the World Bank, the European Central Bank, the Dutch Central Bank, the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB), and Eurostat.
