Study Programme

In-depth course content

The LLM programme in Law and Economics is designed to give you an in-depth knowledge of two very complex subjects, as well as the understanding and expertise you need to see how these two subjects inter-relate. Over the course of a year, you study six compulsory courses, receive training in how to debate and report on issues relating to the law and economy, and look at the legal and economic theories behind competition law, market supervision, market regulation and corporate governance. You also explore a number of important real-life case studies, including:

  • The exclusive distribution of the Apple iPhone
  • Microsoft’s fine from the European Commission
  • The decision of the European Commission to block the merger between two American companies, MCI WorldCom and Sprint, despite the fact that it had already been cleared by US anti-trust authorities
  • Virgin Atlantic’s court action against British Airways for breaking competition rules
  • General Electric’s failed attempted to acquire Honeywell.

Developing professional skills

Classes, lectures and tutorials are all led by leading academics from the fields of both law and economics. Many of the courses you take draw on findings from their own multidisciplinary research projects, as well as reflecting their personal experiences and their excellent professional contacts. Under the guidance of your teachers, you and your fellow students study the theories behind competition law, market supervision and economic regulation and learn how these theories are put into practice. You also develop important practical skills in analysis, debate and communicating at a professional level in English. Lastly, during Semester 2, you have chance to pursue your own research interests by producing a thesis under the supervision of our expert teaching staff.

International networking

The LLM in Law and Economics is a unique programme that attracts students from around the world. As a result, it has a distinctive international flavour that makes it ideal for learning about the views and perspectives of others. As a student on the course, you form part of a young and vibrant network of students, but you are also likely to remain in contact with your fellow students long after graduation. In previous years, students from the course have continued to see each other both personally and professionally, at meetings and conferences around the world.
