International Human Rights and Criminal Justice

Increasingly human rights and criminal justice are subject of heated public debate, placed high on countries’ political agenda. Human rights play an important role when it comes to international relations, the administration of justice and the activities of international organisations and NGO’s. This LLM programme reflects on the many questions raised by the current societal and legal developments in this area: what is the role of the International Criminal Court in the development of international law of human rights. How can states, international organisations and NGOs help to prevent conflicts and gross human rights violations? And which obligations do corporations have when it comes to human rights?

The LLM Human Rights and Criminal Justice takes you straight to the heart of these issues, providing you with a unique opportunity to look at criminal law, human rights and the relationship between them, on an international scale and from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Expert teaching

Home to the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM), and just thirty minutes away from the world’s ‘legal capital’ in The Hague, Utrecht University provides an ideal environment in which to study international law. The SIM is a leading centre of research into human rights, attracting scholars and researchers from around the world. As a result, the programme offers you unique expertise in the area of human rights and criminal justice. You can choose to study from a wide range of optional modules, focusing on the areas that interest you most, learning directly from the experts in each subject, and even becoming involved in the latest, cutting-edge research.

Experience-based learning

The Utrecht University School of Law also benefits from extremely close connections with several international institutions based in The Hague, and with the professionals who work there. As a result, we are able to offer you a unique opportunity to put your learning into practice. We run three separate experience-based practical programmes that give you the chance to work alongside practising professionals and gain an inside view on groundbreaking legal developments.

Scholarships

As a student studying for the LLM in International Human Rights and Criminal Justice, you may also be eligible for one of a number of scholarships. This includes grants from the Netherlands Fellowship Programme, which cover full tuition and living costs.
