Tuition fees

In the Netherlands there are two types of tuition fees, statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees.

The statutory tuition fees apply to students who meet the requirements below: 

• have the EU/EAA, Swiss or Surinam nationality,
  and
• who have not already obtained a degree from a government-funded Dutch university or university of applied sciences (hogeschool) after 1 September 1991. There are a few exceptions, read more information.
  and
• are not enrolled in a privately funded master's programme.

The statutory fees are:

If you do not meet the requirements above, you pay the institutional tuition fees, for  bachelor's programmes (pdf), master's programmes (pdf).

Students who do not live in the residence area in the academic year 2013-2014 will pay the institutional fee equal to the statutory fee.

Special situations
There are a few situations in which the required tuition fee differs from the regular tuition fee, such as:

• Registering for only part of the academic year.
• In some cases, paying the statutory fee and having already paid the required tuition for the academic year at another institute for higher education in the Netherlands means you are eligible for a reduction for redemption from your tuition fee at Utrecht University. You will need a Proof of Payment Tuition Fees (“BBC”) document from the institute you paid tuition fees to.
