Economics of Competition and Regulation

Economics and the law

In a world where financial problems in one country can have repercussions on society around the globe, the subject of economics is no longer simply about efficient markets. Today, it is a subject that affects almost everything – from the regulation of banks to the financing of healthcare and public services. Keeping the economy stable, durable and innovative now requires knowledge of law as well as of market forces – and that means there is a need for economists who understand the importance of competition, regulation and supervision.

A unique approach

The MSc in the Economics of Competition and Regulation directly tackles the interplay between economics and the law at both a national and an international level. Across the course of a year, you explore checks and balances, rules and regulations, and you investigate the organisation and operation of market economies. In doing so, you:

  • Draw on economics, law and the social sciences for a unique multidisciplinary understanding of your subject;
  • Build a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge;
  • Develop key analytical skills in research, policy advice and management;
  • Work closely with your fellow students and your teachers;
  • Have the opportunity to complete an internship;
  • Contribute to research projects at the Tjalling C. Koopmans Institute (TKI), the research institute of Utrecht University School of Economics, and study the very latest insights in economics and law;
  • Specialise in economic, social or financial regulation.

The gateway to Europe

Utrecht – often dubbed the ‘gateway to Europe’ – offers an ideal location in which to study for an MSc in Economics. The Netherlands is home to some of the world’s leading trading companies and financial institutions, and during the Economics of Competition and Regulation programme, you will have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers from these organizations, and build up your network of professional contacts. Ultimately, the programme leaves you well-placed to go on and work at major institutions such as the Dutch Central Bank, the Dutch Competition Authority (NMa) and the Dutch Central Planning Agency (CPB).
