Master's programme

Cultural Anthropology: Sociocultural Transformations

Are you interested in the anthropological study of cultural diversity, power relations and social change in this day and age of globalization? In particular, are you fascinated by issues of ethnicity and religion under globalization, political conflict and social suffering, social justice and reconstruction, power and state formation? This master will provide you with the knowledge and skills to address these subjects through in-depth research.

CASTOR introduces you to the analysis of the complex interplay of cultural diversity and power in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean with a particular emphasis on multi-level analyses ranging from interpersonal relations and local communities to regional, national and global socio-cultural configurations. The programme’s anthropological approach is guided by an emphasis on the interplay of actor, agency, and macro-social structures within specific political contexts and historical processes.

The methodological approach is problem-driven and qualitative. You conduct ethnographic research abroad and write a M.Sc. thesis based on fieldwork data and current theoretical insights.

The programme prepares you for a scientific career, whether in academia, research institutes, government organizations, NGO’s or in private enterprises.
