Primary research targets concern the geodynamics of our planet, particularly, plate tectonics and mantle structure and -dynamics. Research methods comprise forward numerical modelling of geodynamic processes, particularly lithosphere subduction, tomograpic imaging of mantle structure, and inversion approaches for estimating crustal deformation from geodetic observations, all aiming at linking observations to model predictions and properties. Where possible, the research strategy aims at combining data and knowledge from various subfields (geophysics, geology, geodesy) in solid Earth science. Long-term goal is to connect deformation of the crust to the driving mechanisms of the underlying mantle, ultimately for developing physics-based connections to geohazards and georesources.
