Since 2015, I have been working in the Department of Social, Health and Organizational Psychology. I teach, do research, and participate in various committees. My main motivation in my work is the power of social relationships.

In my teaching I therefore focus on social relationships and team spirit. I pay a lot of attention to community building (among students but also teachers) and by using formative evaluation I hope to stimulate a learning environment where students learn together and are not afraid of making mistakes. I also apply experiential learning as much as possible: exercises where students experience a certain phenomenon or concept ('learning by doing').

In my research, I focus on how work relationships are influenced by conflict and feelings of social safety. The topics I specifically address are:

  • Forgiveness: I study when and why people forgive each other, and when it contributes to higher wellbeing. In Wenrui Cao's PhD research, we examined forgiveness in work relationships.
  • Social safety: In Julia Houben's PhD research, we examine how to provide a precise diagnosis of bottlenecks and potential solutions for social safety in the academic context (specifically PhD candidates). Which elements of leadership development and workplace culture are important for this? How can you accurately determine what is not going well and why? What is needed to change that? In this project, we collaborate with Laura Oskam's PhD research at the Netherlands Labour Authority.

I am a strong supporter of Open Science and I pay attention to this in my role as teacher and researcher. I encourage teamwork, involve community partners in our teaching and research, and I work as transparently as possible.
