Research mission statement:

My research team investigates the origin of sedimentary deposits, especially those deposited in deep-marine environments. Our research approach focusses on physical experiments that investigate erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment by water. The experimental results are translated to genetic models for the sedimentary rock record. The full range of relevant temporal and spatial scales is covered, from microsecond scales of fluid turbulence, to millions of years associated with continental-margin development. The primary inspiration for research questions is derived from deposits, which are studied in onshore outcrops, on the seafloor, and in subsurface and submarine core sites.

The research in my group contributes to a better understanding of ancient environments on Earth. It also finds direct application in industries.

Teaching mission statement:

I strive for excellence in teaching as well as research. My teaching aims to support students in becoming the next generation of geoscientists. Specifically, I want to help them understand that the characteristics of sedimentary deposits reflect past conditions at Earth’s surface. Such knowledge can be applied in societal contexts where deposit characteristics play a role (Subsurface Storage & Energy; Infrastructure & Built Environment; Water & Environment), or form the start of academic careers. My teaching covers my expertise: Undergraduate Field Mapping and Physical Geology (Teruel province, Spain). Undergraduate Sedimentology & Stratigraphy (with Frits Hilgen). Master Course Dynamics of Sedimentary Systems (with Paul Meijer & João Trabucho Alexandre). I serve as the Career Officer for the Teaching Institute of Earth Sciences.
