Water is my passion. My career started in water pollution research and gradually developed into science-policy advice and management. It gradually shifted from the national to the international level. Kees has worked at the Dutch government in three different Ministries on water, chemicals, health and the environment, the Institute of Risk Assessment Sciences (UtrechtUniversity) and at the European Commission as Director at the Joint Research Institute in Italy. He likes to manage complex multi-stakeholder processes in the science-policy interface in areas such chemicals, health and the environment. He has a track-record of putting science into regulatory practice. After this 30-year journey he returned to where he started: water.

Kees van Leeuwen (1955) is Principal Scientist at KWR Watercycle Research Institute (Nieuwegein) and professor in Water Management and Urban Development at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development (Department of Innovation, Environmental and Energy Sciences) at the Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University. He published more than 250 reports and publications and 2 editions of the book Risk Assessment of Chemicals. An Introduction, a book on Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxic substances (PBTs) and the Urban Water Atlas for Europe. His research focus is on water management and governance in cities.
