Na in 2015 te zijn gepromoveerd aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, waar hij meerdere jaren als docent Wetenschapsfilosofie werkzaam was, zal Lukas Verburgt van 2017 t/m 2021 bij HPS in Utrecht als postdoctoraal onderzoeker werken aan zijn VENI-project (NWO) 'A New History and Philosophy for the Exact Sciences: The Case of the Second Scientific Revolution'. 

Verburgts lijst met recente boekpublicaties omvat een intellectuele biografie van John Venn, John Venn: A Life in Logic (The University of Chicago Press, 2021), en boekprojecten, waaronder een monografie, Victorian Probability (Palgrave Macmillan), en twee bundels, "A Prodigy of Universal Genius": Robert Leslie Ellis, 1817-1859 (Springer) en Selected Correspondence and Unpublished Writings of John Venn (Springer). 

Hij is als Visiting Scholar/Fellow verbonden (geweest) aan Trinity College, Cambridge (februari 2020), het Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlijn (2014), het Department for History and Philosophy of Science, Cambridge (2017) en het Vossius Center for the History of Humanities and Sciences, Amsterdam (2017). 

Hij heeft verscheidene artikelen gepubliceerd op het gebied van de geschiedenis en filosofie van de exacte wetenschappen, met name die van de 19e- en vroeg-20e eeuw. Zijn artikelen verschenen in vakbladen als Historia Mathematica, Annals of Science en Studies in History and Philosophy of Science.

Hij is lid van o.a. The British Society for the History of Mathematics, The European Society for the History of Science en The Canadian Society for the Philosophy and History of Mathematics, en peer-reviewer voor onder meer Historia Mathematica, Statistical Science en International Studies in the Philosophy of Science.

Sinds kort is hij ook werkzaam als book review editor van Historia Mathematica.
